A recent heat wave in Cape Town had us running around looking for a dish that would suite summer. I stumbled upon a sausage and pasta dish on YouTube by Jamie Oliver and decided to give it try with some modifications.

This is a very easy recipe where you can basically use any type of stewing beef meat and any good quality fortified wine. The anchovies can be omitted, but it does provide that extra umami taste to the dish.

This dish almost seems Arabic instead of European with the use of sultanas and pine nuts. This is not surprising as Sicily was under Arab rule from 827 to 1061 and Sicilian cuisine was strongly influenced by the Arabs.
Avgolemono is an egg lemon sauce that I have wanted to make for ages. As this week was Greek date night, it was the perfect occasion to make a traditional Greek meatball soup that incorporates this sauce.

Trying to find a table for lunch at a jam-packed Melkbosstrand beachfront (without a reservation – yes I know) on a public holiday did not work out so well on Tuesday. We returned home hungry and decided to make a paella with whatever ingredients we had at home. (more…)
