I got my hands on some imported Hungarian paprika and decided to make a couple of Hungarian dishes. I started off with this very rich and wholesome Hungarian mushroom soup which is packed with earthy flavours and very easy to make.
This is a very easy recipe where you can basically use any type of stewing beef meat and any good quality fortified wine. The anchovies can be omitted, but it does provide that extra umami taste to the dish.
I got the original recipe from Jess Pryles for this twice cooked drunken beef short ribs from here, but I altered it quite a bit for our taste. Although this recipe is quite straight forward it does take some time to prepare. This dish is perfect for those cold winter evenings when you crave “comfort food”.
As date night and Women’s Day were on the same day this year, I decided to make a three course meal for Tanya. The three meals consisted of sticky chicken wings, kudu sosaties and bread pudding.
A friend of mine recently took me to a Mexican shop in Midrand called Azteca where I bought some authentic Mexican ingredients. Obviously the next date night had to have a Mexican theme and I decided on achiote chicken and ancho pork.

Goa – a coastal region in western India is well known for it’s seafood dishes. Goan cuisine is heavily influenced by its Hindu origins, Muslim rule and subsequent Portuguese colonialisation.
This prawn curry starts of with a masala of spices, garlic, ginger and vinegar (the Portugese influence), before coconut milk is added to make a creamy curry full of flavour.
One of Belgium’s classic dishes is Moules Frites – mussels steamed in a white wine sauce with fries. Adrienne makes a great mussel potjie in a garlic cream sauce, so the challenge was on to see whether I could make a mussel dish that would measure up.
I wanted to redeem myself after overcooking the beef fillet at the girls’ lunch in June, so I decided to make Beef Wellington for date night. Keeping in line with the English theme, I made Haddock Fish Cakes for a starter and Lemon Posset for dessert.
Decided to make an old favourite of mine for date night with a little bit of a twist.
